SKILLS NEED FOR OFFENSIVE LANING AND OMNI-LANING
I have proposed the three skill builds that I have seen used most commonly in public games and in competitive games. The first one, is the one that I find best and most commonly used in public games. As far as competitive, I find that the pros like to mix it up. Skill Build III is a very unorthodox build, but my preferred build. I found it from one of ZSMJ's replays and I imagine he leveled the Aura because Death Pulse costs too much mana at low levels and because Sadist is useless without spells.

Skill Build I
  • Level 1: Death Pulse
  • Level 2: Sadist
  • Level 3: Death Pulse
  • Level 4: Sadist
  • Level 5: Death Pulse
  • Level 6: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 7: Sadist
  • Level 8: Death Pulse
  • Level 9: Sadist
  • Level 10: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 11: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 12: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 13: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 14: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 15: Stats
  • Level 16: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 17-25: Stats
Skill Build II
  • Level 1: Death Pulse
  • Level 2: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 3: Death Pulse
  • Level 4: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 5: Death Pulse
  • Level 6: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 7: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 8: Death Pulse
  • Level 9: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 10: Sadist
  • Level 11: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 12: Sadist
  • Level 13: Sadist
  • Level 14: Sadist
  • Level 15: Stats
  • Level 16: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 17-25: Stats
Skill Build III
  • Level 1: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 2: Death Pulse
  • Level 3: Death Pulse
  • Level 4: Sadist
  • Level 5: Death Pulse
  • Level 6: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 7: Death Pulse
  • Level 8: Sadist
  • Level 9: Sadist
  • Level 10: Sadist
  • Level 11: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 12: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 13: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 14: Heartstopper Aura
  • Level 15: Stats
  • Level 16: Reaper's Scythe
  • Level 17-25: Stats
By taking a simple glance at all of the skill builds, one can see that Death Pulse should be maxed about before any of the other passives. That's because it makes Necrolyte what he is. Also, his ultimate should also be maxed out as soon as possible.

Item Build

Starting
I prefer this item build most of the time. The Ring of Protection allows you to transition into a Ring of Basilius quickly and the GG branches give those oh-so-lovely stats. The tangos provide healing from harassment and the salve helps you out when you need HP fast.

Alternatively, you could also settle for the item build below.
This item build sacrifices your salve for another set of tangos and another GG branch. I only suggest going with this build if you either A) Have a weak opposing lane or B) You can play cautiously and with discipline.Otherwise, I suggest you stick with the first starting item build.

Early Game
  • The Magic Wand provides you with some stats and much more survivability if you're against a caster in lane. Treads are my, and many others (including professionals), choice of boots because they allow you to be flexible. Strength is good for engaging in team fights while Intelligence is good for spamming Death Pulse. Although, Agility won't see much use. And lastly, the Scroll of Town Portal, an absolute must. Ironically, I find it difficult to always carry a TP along with me, I'm not sure why. But don't be like me, ALWAYS carry a TP if possible! It's a way to get out of an incoming gank; or if you can juke your way out of the gank, TP home.
Mid Game
  • The Mekansm, Hood, and Vanguard should now be completed if you're having a great game. If not your game is not going the way you like it to go, have atleast the Mekansm and the Hood. As mentioned earlier, Mekansm is a great support item, as it beefs up your allies and heals them too. The Hood will help you tank the magical damage, and well, that's all it really does. Same applies for the Vanguard. Both will supply you with great HP regeneration.
Alternatively, you could have rushed your Radiance. This won't give you any tanking abilities, but rather, it will turn you into the semi-carry role. The 60 damage that is added is fairly significant, but the focus of the item is the Radiance Burn. This combined with the Heartstopper Aura will crank up your AOE presence by quite a bit. Normally, I would not advise that you go this build. Your team needs you to support, however, it's always a possibility.

Note: You must get this by the 25 minute mark at MOST! Anything past that and it becomes less cost-effective. For many heroes, a 30 minute Radiance is fine. However, you have a HUGE laning advantage over them, which should give you an easier time farming.

Late Game
  • The only added item was Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse. Upgrade your Hood to a Pipe, as the "Barrier" ability is quite useful. Also provides more HP regeneration on top of that. The game should now be wrapping up. Win that crucial team fight or push in.
Luxury

At first, you might think that Assault Cuirass on Necrolyte is ridiculous. Hear me out. This item has 3 auras that support your team and the additional armor is great. The only thing that Necrolyte can't really use effectively is the attack speed bonus.

My favorite luxury item on Necrolyte. More intelligence for more Death Pulses, more armor for tanking, an AOE nuke, and an aura that slows down attack speed. For 4700 gold, it's definitely worth it if you can afford it.

Sheer HP boosting. Makes you the ultimate tank combined with your other items. The HP regeneration also means less Fountain visiting. Upgrade to this from your Vanguard.

If the game manages to get this late, Boots of Travel is essential. Teleporting to your nearest creep to push or defend will be necessary if you want to win the game.

Rejected

 Stop kill-stealing like a n00b.

Your goal is to TANK the damage, not to prevent it from hitting you. This will take the focus OFF of you and to your nearest allied hero. Your role as the tanky semi-carry has just failed.

Any DPS items are pretty much a waste of gold on Necrolyte. Never buy anything from the Ancient Weaponry store EXCEPT for Radiance (maybe).

Gameplay and the Three Stages of the Game
Remember, you are a support hero, not a carry. Your goal is to help out your team-mates, not rampage and kill all the other heroes. How do I do this? Simple. Spam that Death Pulse when opponents are nearby and when allies are nearby. By doing this, you and your team benefit a lot. You get SOME farm (don't steal from carry), your opponents get damaged, your allies get healed. There you go, 3 things done with 1 pulse.

Early Game
Stay in your lane as much as possible. The longer you stay in your lane, the more farm you get. This farm will result in better items and usually more damage will be done to the opponent. The ability to spam Death Pulse is average, not too high and not too low. Use your mana carefully and get those last hits to power up the Death Pulse.

Mid Game
Here is the stage where you start to peak. At this point, you should be pretty tank-y. If you're lucky you will have a Guinsoo's Scythe of Vyse, which allows you to basically spam Death Pulse without stopping. Use your ultimate on weakened heroes, if possible don't kill them, leave that to the carry. Remember, there's a 1.5 second stun on your ultimate. However, don't try to always let your carry get the kill if you're afraid that the kill might be missed.

Late Game
Try to end it around here if possible. Anything too late and you will become weaker, however your ultimate will scale really well. Remember to buy those BoTs if it gets too late. The Death Pulse and Shiva's Blast should be able to clear massive creep waves.
